Healthy Relationships are Defined by the Beauty Within

As a child, I would check out the book “The Best Loved Doll” over and over again. The story line melted my heart as the little girl Betsy had to make a difficult decision. The decision resulted in taking her best loved doll to a fancy tea party instead of her fanciest, prettiest dolls. Betsy decided to take her because even though there were prizes for the prettiest dress, prettiest hair, etc, Betsy knew in her heart that the doll that loved her the most was the doll most deserving to go to the party. Betsy’s best loved doll was beautiful to Betsy and was likely most beautiful on the outside at one time. But, now her doll was worn, had a bad haircut, had a ragged dress, yet, because she was always there for Betsy this doll was the most beautiful of all.

Betsy and her doll signify the realism of relationships where so many men and women are influenced primarily by looks. Yet, often the people we love the most and who love us the most are beautiful even more because they are equally beautiful on the inside. Seemingly, our characteristics that make us “us” become the traits that are most loved. Whereas, the need to be beautiful based on Hollywood standards creates this lack of authentic beauty. Sadly, the drive to feel as if you are beautiful only if you are a certain weight with a certain bra size, or perfectly symmetrical with perfect teeth and brows makes us a façade. Yes, the person is beautiful, however, they were just as beautiful before being themselves. And, once you get to know them as they were, they became even more beautiful until their inner beauty became scarred with the focus only on their outer beauty.

The reality is that when you are truly in love, you see your partner as gorgeous and beautiful inside and out! Suddenly, being perfect isn’t necessary because they become perfect in your eyes due to their inner spirit reflecting more beauty then we could have ever hoped to accomplish with scalpel. So, take measures to build the self-esteem of your partner to let them know that they are even more beautiful than a starving supermodel and/or more masculine then a body builder on television. When you reach that level of maturity in your relationship, only then will you understand the beauty of real love.
