My mother-in-law Phyllis (Gnagy-Shankster) Miller just died due to complications from breast cancer. She has been in stage 4 for 14 years after a mastectomy over 40 years ago. While she was able to fight cancer for a long time, the pain due to cancer caused her must distress affecting her ability to be happy, to smile, and to show love. She was in pain most of the time which limited her ability to move, freedom to go places, and comfort in just sitting. Therefore, it comprised her disposition. Most people never want to admit that side effect, but it is time that we acknowledge that cancer and pain from side effects of treatment are taxing on everyone not just the family member.

There were so many services and products that could have assisted Phyllis with her pain. However, we didn’t always know about them or felt the financial crunch that limited the availability of the items that might have eased her pain or added to her mobility. You might have had a family member that suffered more due to lack of products or services that would have made them more comfortable, happier, and gave the ability to move around. That is why I have to step up and do something about cancer more than I have ever done before!

Your story might be just like my family’s and unfortunately, in many cases maybe even worse. However, I cannot let cancer affect people like it does. Yes, the pain and suffering from cancer treatment is hard enough, but to add the emotional and financial tool on the patient and their families is even worse. Add to that the lack of mobility, the freedom to travel and attend family events, and the lack of being able to care for oneself like even eating, and the person with cancer loses all hope.

Let me explain further why this is so important to me. My daughters had a grandmother they never met die due to cancer, she died before they were born. Then, the only two grandmothers they have ever known and their great grandmother all have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Two are survivors and remain in admission, however, their other grandmother died after her cancer metastasized and literally grew out of her chest. On top of that, my children have witnessed my best friend go through a difficult time with a mastectomy and other treatment due to breast cancer. While she is currently a survivor, my children do not know a life without cancer in it.

However, these family members are only a few of the many friends and extended family members with cancer or affected by cancer of other friends or loved ones. This has to stop. Please donate, so that we can make a difference in the lives of others. Financial support will assist the financial obligations of cancer patients for medical services or products and non-medical services or products not covered or not covered fully by either local, state, or national charities. However, to share the love, we will periodically donate to other organizations to assist them, too. There is a gap in the help that is needed, help me and my family reach out to others so that we can provide the services that are not covered.

We also would love assistance in establishing this foundation, so if you have experience or just the ambition to be a part of this movement, please step up. Presently, financial contributions are most welcome as we get this established with our business plan and legal filings. Additionally, we will need direct mailing assistance and fundraising assistance from volunteers to in-kind contributions of graphic design, printing, mailings, etc. We want to be of service on a national level and we want to go big. As my one assistant honors her grandmother’s life and big attitude by saying, “Go big or go home.” By the way, she (the grandmother) died of cancer, too.

In exchange for your donation, we will list your loved one on our memorial page, if you desire a photo and a story, please send it in, too. We want to create a memorial for people affected by cancer in any form. Presently, we are in the process of creating a formal non-profit organization to get in the fight against cancer. You will be sent a thank you card as well as a receipt for your donation within a couple weeks as we get the papers back from the state legalizing our foundation.

Thank you for getting in the fight against cancer! Let’s give people the mobility and services to keep fighting and give them to hope to win!
